On Sunday afternoon a lot of the folks from Omatic left so after I cried alone in the woods mourning the fact that my friends Ed and Louie Vito left I shook my self off and went to the naked hippie hot springs about a half hour North of Truckee in Sierraville. The thing about Tahoe is that if you get off the beaten path at all you have pretty much complete solitude. The hot springs in Sierra ville were so cool, no alcohol but lots of hot springs and cool people in a beautiful setting. They have organic meals and lodging, see the photos

3_trail.jpg

4_signs.jpg
peaceful spot

5_globe.jpg
The Globe “hotel” was built in 1870 and used to be a brothel and a chinese card palace at one time. You want to stay somewhere different – this is your place

Next day it was off to Sqauw Valley which had a lot of snow, no bare spots. Squaw was and kind of still is the “extreme” spot to be. When you see the photos you will see why. It has more cliffs, chutes, and rocks than perhaps even Jackson Hole. Jackson is probably steeper but Squaw has seemingly endless pockets of rock jumps and stuf – all in plain view, hence the nickname Sqaullywood. Back in the day when magazine photos came from resorts that notaml people could ride and not helicopters or sleds back like 25 miles from the road, Squaw was the backdrop for many snowboard photos. The photos may come from elsewhere but Squaw is still bad ass, check the photos and check out a historical spot – Squaw Valley

Acres: 4,000
Lifts: 34, including 7 high speed lifts, two gondolas type things and a tram
Parks: 4 and at least a superpipe
Web: www.squaw.com
Season: Nov-May
Snowfall: 450”
Vert: 2,850

Argueably KT22 chairlift offers, inch for inch, some of the most challenging terrain in the USA. If you are here on a powder day, you are STOKED

The public park was looking fun too, especially for May! Hits of all sizes

13_forum.jpg
Now I noticed off in the distance some people killing some HUGE kickers, then a helicopter started filming them

14_lowheli.jpg
So I walked for like 20 minutes or so and it turns out it was the whole Forum team filming for a video. The team manager Brian Knox, was pretty cool and said I could shoot some lifestyle stuff but he wanted me to not shoot the jumps so they could save it for the video. I mean I guess they spent all that money so I was happy to do what he said. There were three people in the heli; the pilot, Ian Ruhter and the fimer

15_blauvelt.jpg
Jake Blauvelt waiting for his run

16_bell.jpg
Stevie Bell was having fun. He wanted to take a ride in the heli but Brian Knox said “this is not Disneyland, this is expensive” Stevie cracked up. Stevie is from Utah and you would think that since he is the only black dude in the hole state he would be shunned…rumors prove that the opposite is quite true. it makes sense too, Utah chicks are dyeing for something different, something to distract them from their daily boring life. If you are from California - take your pick. If you are Stevie Bell…they come running, or so it has been said

23_foresthillbridge.jpg
On the way back to the airport in Sacramento I stopped at the Foresthill bridge which is the highest bridge in California at 730 feet tall. Lots of people base jump off this thing, throw cars off for movies, jump off without a parachute (suicide). I just read a book about a ranger who patrolled this area, pretty cool book. Look in the lower right hand part of the corner…

24_foresthill.jpg
…this kid was sitting on the bridge and his girlfriend was pissed saying “how much longer you going to sit there” People were rafting the river and sunbathing down below – 730 feet below

25_suicide.jpg
back at work Monday people asked how my weekend was I said “well I walked to the middle of the highest bridge in California and did not jump” They just kind of looked at me funny, not sure if I am serious, others laughed their ass off but if you go to the Foresthill bridge to commit suicide, you can call these people first

While the better half of Snowrev.com were down in Mammoth raising cain at the WCI, Ed and I had the good fortune of being invited to a photo shoot with one of the newer teams in snowboarding; Omatic. In case you do not know (If you do know about Omatic, then skip to the next paragraph please) Omatic was formed by Todd Richards, who is kind of the mad genius-do it all of snowboarding, Tara Dakides whose accomplishments in snowboarding and fiendish good looks have made her one of the hottest selling females in the sport and Jason Kaynes who is responsible for a lot of good snowboards throughout history, including 5150, Forum, Jeenyus and more. In fact Jason was responsible for one of my favorite boards - the Forum Bjorn Leines. These three, with the help of Tanya (who has a lot of experience too) are the main brains behind Omatic. With a ton of snowboard companies out there they wanted to have something different, their hook, they provide quality boards at a more affordable price. Enough of the business and on to the action.

Omatic went all out and got Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson to build them a huge kicker at Northstar near Lake Tahoe. Northstar was closed but there is a ton of snow left so it was no problem to build the unique kicker. The jump was so good that Todd Richards said “That is the best jump I ever hit, pleasure wise”. If the riders landed in the sweet spot you could barely tell they were just dozens of feet above the ground cuz it was so smooth in the lz. Despite being a new company Omatic has acquired a strong team. Showing up in Tahoe was; Hampus Mosseson, Louie Vito, Todd Richards, Tim Nelson, JJ Johnson, Max Loos, Thomas Schwarz, Robert Wallner, Murray and Jakob Wilhelmson who was riding a Lib Tech so I am not sure why he was there but he shredded so f-it. Pierre, the filmer from DC was there and other media types. Chanelle Sladics and Tara Dakides were MIA. Saturday was pretty much the day of maximum action. The whole crew was up there. Todd was spinning 7’s making big jumps and taking some big falls at almost 40. Hampus Mosseson has amazing style kind of like Daniel Frank and Danny Kass. Hampus was spinning 9’s all over the place. Tim Nelson, from Canada, was the first to man up and hit the big booter. Jacob did some sick 9’s then got busy doing some smaller tech street skateboarding style manuevers (photos later). Snowboard Revolution’s adopted son, Louie Vito was, I believe the only person to spin some 1080’s. Louie was saying he wanted to learn 12’s. I said forget it, 12’s are wack and we talked about all the people that currently do 12’s and came to the conclusions, 12’s are just a huckfest. Unless someone can do 12’s with style - don’t do them, then again I guess that’s progress, who knows? On Sunday a lot of the crew left, Todd went home to Encinitas for a day before going the east coast, then to Mammoth becasue “6 hours is good for a hurt back”, Hampus and Jakob - back to LAX and europe, Louie - down to Mammoth, which left Tim Nelson and Robert Wallner to step it up for Sunday and they did. With riders from Sweden, Germany, Canada, Austria and the USA it was a great weekend. I learned one thing talking to Hampus about shipping a tricked Tundra, a snowmobile and a custom single speed bicycle back home to Sweden, that is if you can become a pro snowboarder, do it!

06_todd7.jpg
Todd Richards with a stylee front 7, how many company owners can do this?

08_nelson.jpg
Tim Nelson is a rider from Canada, home of the long sleeve. Canadians are super nice but when it comes to sports they can be pretty much nutcases. To prove my point, Tim was the first of the group to sac up and hit the bigger jump. After Tim hit the big jump, it was on!

07_todd.jpg
Todd Richards again and here is a pretty good overview of the jump. You could land either side like a hip too!

09_jacob9.jpg
Jakob Wilhelmson is another rider I have never seen ride till this weekend. He was riding a Lib Tech so I am not sure why he was there but it was great to watch him. Jacob rides for Quiksilver, Todd rides for Quiksilver, maybe that was the connection. This is a 900

10_hampusswitch7.jpg
Tim Nelson was the first to jump the big jump as a hip but Hampus Mosseson was the first to clear the whole kit - very sick switch 7

11_murray.jpg
Murray, lives in Canada too, near Tim. Murray had pretty much a broken foot but still managed to hit the jump - death or glory, especially with his boss and teammates watching

13_vito9.jpg
Louie, Louie Vito spins a 9. I was pretty much expecting to head out to a strip bar in Reno or something but everyone was pretty chill, not too much partying. Just hanging out at night with friends, riding - the things that matter

14_vito.jpg
Looking from the pit into the light at Vito doing a 1080

17_todd.jpg
The boss again - Todd Richards. Todd is pretty much the Omatic team manager and owner. You think when he gives advice on riding he knows what he hell he is talking about?

Robert Wallner came from Austria and did not waste his plane ticket by sitting around

19_hampus.jpg
On Saturday night The owner of snowrev.com Ed and Hampus had everyone, lauging so hard they where crying or in shock. Here they are in the middle of the dreaded game “would you rather” with questions brutal in nature

20_vito.jpg
Louie Vito calling Stevie Bell to ask about the eiffel tower. Funny, I saw Stevie, two days later

21_timnelson.jpg
Sunday morning was pretty cloudy with a lot of the crew gone. Tim Nelson again stepped it up, hitting the hip frontside

Tim Nelson Alley oop over the hip. About 5 minutes later it started to snow – then rain hard which ended the session. Sucked cuz JJ Johnson was getting ready to kill it

We got more from this shoot coming up soon, including interviews with Hampus Mosseson and Jakob Wilhemson

The upcoming Pro Tec Pool party is always one of the most anticipated contests of the year. Pros from the past present and future show up to have fun, show people how to really skate cement and hopefully win some money. Eric Nash comes out of the woodwork with this Indy Air

20080412-20080412-py0v1750.jpg
Lance Mountain is always a podium contender and always a crowd favorite - powering though the corner

20080417-20080417-py0v1765.jpg
Chris “the Shadow” Reeves lives in Orange County and you can bet he digs everyone coming to the Vans park to practice

20080417-20080417-py0v1768.jpg
What other skateboard contest in the world do people practice, for up to a month for? Not many. Vans rider Josh Borden bones a frontside air over the hip

20080417-20080417-py0v1771.jpg
Jeff Grosso is one of those guys that everyone who skateboards should see skate at least once

20080417-20080417-py0v1797.jpg
Josh Borden with a HUGE ollie transfer off the hip behind him and into the shallow corner pocket in front of him

20080424-20080424-py0v2398.jpg
Frontside Pivot on the hip, this is one of the hardest spots to get to in the whole pool

20080424-20080424-py0v2412.jpg
The Combi pool is as much about lines as tricks. Sergie Ventura got this lip slide transfer off the hip, which is a super challenging spot to a lipslide on

20080425-20080425-py0v2434.jpg
Lasek is always a favorite and if he lands his insane tricks – he will win PERIOD. He has so many lines and so many tricks in here but he has to make them

20080425-20080425-py0v2448.jpg
Ho, hum, just casually catch a heelflip to fakie above giant gaping cement pit that eats humans but not Bucky Lasek is not the menu for the Combi tonight

20080425-20080425-py0v2450.jpg
Alex Perelson has been coming on strong on the vert scene and if he transfers half those vert skills to the complex lines of the combi, he will make top 10 for sure

Yes it is the end of April but here at the Revolution we roll till the last flake melts and you should be too. Truth be told, this my first actual snowboard trip of the year, on April 26th. The first trip that does not involve the pleasure of watching everyone else rip through the lens of camera anyway - I was hyped. Oregon is not really known as a huge winter vacation mecca as much as say Vail is. Mt Bachelor is more so than Mt. Hood but even so Mt Bachelor has no slopeside lodging and neither does Mt Hood, really. That does not mean you should not come here. There is a lot od other stuff to do here besides ride. The nearby Colombia River Gorge is gorgeous, all the skateparks down in the town of Portland, a mere hour away, plus the nightlife, naked hipppie hot springs, visit Nike – whatever. There are four resorts on the flank of Mt. Hood; Skibowl, Timberline, Cooper Spur and Mt Hood Meadows, the biggest of them all.

Mt Hood Meadows is super fun with lots of nooks and crannies. It reminded me of say 10 small east resorts all packed together into 2150 west acres with a lot of snow, good terrain parks and some steep ass easily accesable back country. The inbounds terrain is not too steep but there are windlips every where so the whole mountain is kind of a terrain park. Speaking of park, Mt Hood Meadows often hosts events like Vegetate and photo shots for Mack Dawg and the like so you know they support parks. Heather Canyon has some insane backcountry style runs that access by hiking or by snowcat. Located on the eastern flank of Mr Hood it is a spot to hit for sure while in Oregon. It may even be worthy to spend a week in Oregon; 2-4 days at Meadows and 2-4 days at Bachelor. Of course around the corner from Meadows is Timberline; the US mecca of summer snow but that is another story

62.jpg

Bottom elevation: 4,523’
Top of lifts: 2,777’
Top of Heather Canyon: 9,000’
Lift served vert drop: 2,777’
Total vert drop: 4,477’
Acres: 2,150
Annual snowfall: 430 inches
Lifts: 11 (5 hs quads)
All day ticket: $54 ($64 on peak days)
Parks: 5 and one superpipe

20080426-15_windriver.jpg
The surrounding scenery is, beautiful I spent three hours bushwacking to try to get a photo of Salmon swimming up river or big foot, it was fun looking though– The Wind River in Washington. There are some naked hippie hot springs on the wind river. I was once sat in there with the chick I was dating at the time, big ol’ salmon where swimming up stream, bald eagles were flying around. That was in, uh, 1992. Access to the springs is temporarily closed, times change

Salba is pretty much in the 1st generation of modern skateboarding. Placing in contests in the 70’s - and still

20080425-py0v2424.jpg
Chris Miller came up in the 80’s and is probably on a lot of peoples top ten skaters of all time list. Chris is about 39

Bucky was a young ripper riding for Powell at the age of 13 in the late 80’s. He never gave up and still continues to be one of the best skaters in the world in his early to mid 30’s after taking the world by storm in the 90’s

20080425-py0v2451.jpg
In his late teens, Alex Perelson came up at Clairemont skatepark in the early part of this century under the guidance of Neil Blender and Darren Navarette and his dad with the video camera. Alex is just coming on strong in the past year. This huge and fast ollie transfer is BIO

Riley here must be in his early teens. He gets better every week

My boss Ed said I should hook up with Danny to see for some photos one weekend in Mammoth. This guy was ripping so hard we a got a ton of photos in two days so I decided to ask him some questions…

Name: Daniel Brian Thomas
Hometown: Whitefish Montana
Age: 24
Current Residence: Mammoth Lakes CA
Sponsors: Oakley, Nomis, Bern Unlimited, OneWay Bordshop, and Burton has been helping me out tons….Jesus Christ, Much thanks to all of them!
Favorite snow brands: All of the above, All Analog outerwear…

SR: What brought you from Montana to Mammoth?
DT: I was always riding Powder, and wanted to push it more in the Park, and Mammoth has pretty much got that area locked down!….I also just wanted to get out and explore more of the world God gave us…

SR: Doesn’t Big Mountain have sick riding?
DT: The trees and powder is out of control…plus everyday you can feel like your the only one on the mountain just you , your tunes and God…

SR: Do you ever see Andrew Crawford in Montana?
DT: Yeah I have actually worked to build the little park that we had at Big Mountain and he came in and gave us some suggestions and was probably one of the most down to earth guys I have ever met…

SR: When you first rode the park in mammoth where you intimidated or did you know you could school everyone?
DT: I was deffinitely a little intimidated, but once you start watching everyone throw down, it pushes you more and more to become to land the tricks you always wanted to….it’s always nice to get pushed!…

SR: What is good about living in Mammoth?
DT: Where do I start?…I have learned more in the last year and a half with snowboarding than i ever have in my life, I met soo many good people, lots of best friends, I met My amazing girlfriend here, even tho I have only been here a few years I will always think of Mammoth my second home…

SR: What is bad?
DT: Theres not really many bad points, i guess sometimes I think the crowds get a little crazy, but then I think were all here for the same reason so I can’t really blame them…

SR: Do some of the girls take on multiple partners in Mammoth since there are so few
girls there?
DT: lol Ya know, I couldn’t really say, I don’t really take to the bar scene much…

SR: How do you “get” girls in Mammoth?
DT: Well my girlfriend is the only girl for me, and thats pretty much the way it’s always gonna be…

SR: Should people come to Mammoth or stay away?
DT: I think everyone should experience what mammoth has to offer, it’s a super fun experience!…

SR: What riders inspire you?
DT: I could go on for ever, but here are a few, Lonnie Kauk, Danny Davis, Kevin Pierce, Devin Walsh, Simon Chamberlain, andreas Wigg, I could go all day long…

SR:Best riders of all time?
DT:All of the above and always Terje…

SR: If you could steal the talent, style and or tricks of any 5 riders and combine them into one, who would you pick and why?
DT: I have always liked Danny Davis, and Kevin pierce’s style and tricks but I don’t want to take any of their talent, I just want to have my own style that God gave me and influence the next generation like they both influenced me…

SR: Top 5 songs and/or bands?
DT: Shiny Toy Guns, Kill Hannah, DJ Ratatat, Sounds, Black Audio….super fun to ride to….

SR: Who do you ride with?
DT: Neil Maher, Mourice Sanches, Josh Dibble, Forest Schmidt, just a few homies that really motivate me….

SR: What inspires you to shred?
DT: Everyone I see everyday pushing themselves and having fun and really taking advantage of that passion, cause there’s not much point in riding without the passion…

SR: Other interests besides snowboarding?
DT: Traveling to all sorts of places, hiking, hanging out with my girlfriend and family, camping, floating the owens river, pretty much anything outdoors…

SR: What are your friends back in Montana doing?
DT: Some have left Montana and the others are still shredding Big Mountain, and some are going to school….moving on doing their own thing….

SR: Do your parents want you get a real job or keep shredding?
DT: Well my family is pretty much my sis and my Mom and they have always been super supportive and helped me out alot along the way….I love them tons!

SR: Summer Plans?
DT: Mount Hood, maybe Camp of Champions, if I can get my pasport in time…lol…and eventually Snow Park in New Zealand…

SR: Plans for snowboarding - make a living or have fun?
DT: Well it will always be fun to me, but if I can make a living out of having fun than i’m all for it…

SR: Anyhthing else you want to say, fell free to sound off here
DT: God Bless everyone who helped me and supported me along the way, all my sponsors, family, Girlfriend, all my freinds, Snowboard Revolution, George Crosland for this interview, and always Jesus Christ!!

Thanks again george for everything!!

Danny sends it off the big jump at Mammoth, you know the one jump at Mammoth that when people go off of everyone on the chair and Gondola will turn around and look backwards at to watch

8_danny.jpg
Nose press at June. Danny was a super nice and respectful dude, probably as a result of his upbringing in Montana

9_danny.jpg
The big jump again. Danny does go to Church but his pastor (or preacher or whatever, sorry I don’t know) is Matt Hamer so it could very well be called the church of big air

Front board at June

12_danny.jpg
Andrecht on the truck trailer in the main park at Mammoth. While shooting this interview and Josh Dibbles we managed to destroy two boards - Danny’s and Josh’s if that is an indication as to how hard these guy rode in two days

Blunt on the big vert wall at Mammoth. this was a fun ass session, Molly Aguirre and other joined us at this point and they just lapped the park and I sat around and took photos. Well taking photos was not as fun as lapping the park but it was still fun

Front 9 tail grab of the big kickker at Mammoth. Danny is one of those guys you see in the park and wonder to yourself or out loud to your friends “who the heck is that guy”

Shaun Farmer and Bob Klien. They are in the band THC. Bob Klien is DK’s agent (or was at one time) also BK rode Squaw the first day it ever opened to snowboarding, along with Tina and Mike Basich, Mike Chantry, Don and Danielle Bostick and others. I tjhink BK was pro too. We all know who Farmer is…. or at least you should! I watched so many video footage of Farmer back in the day, Critical Condition “This is the greatest fucking rhyme of all time, drill a hole in your head - pour it into your mind” Shaun was also in First Decent - dude is epic!

bridges.JPG
Pat “the eye” Bridges does an Andrecht to fakie on the eye at the Grenade Games. He smoked a cigarette and chugged a Monster to get up to this. Bridges is the man… how many editors do you see killing it like this!

magoon.JPG
Lucas Magoon is not just a rail master, he can ride pipe pretty well too. Lucas was getting these sick ass front side tail taps but way beyond a tail tap cuz he was bending the SHIT out of his tail on em so he was fully balanced up there on the 420 red eye. Then he started busting these crazy tailtaps to fakie, which is what you see here. I am not even sure if there is a name for it - front tail block to fakie?

Luke Mitrani has a pretty nice matching color combo going from his head down to his toe straps not to mention this nice front five

The Grenade Games went down in June Lake this past weekend to celebrate green. Today we give you a brief re-cap of Saturday’s events which was pretty much slopestyle day. Basically Grenade rented out June Mountain for a party. Pretty much no rule was the rule. The price of admission was $30 for one day or $50 for two. Keep in mind the price of admission included all the riding you can handle for 7 hours and free entry into any event of your choice. A private party at June Lake with some of the world’s best snowboarders and other like minded individuals – I am in! Lot’s of beer, lots of trips to the woods for 420 action, lots of action on the hill, lots of fun, and lots of drinking in the bars.

The slopestyle course was basically the same course that June had set up towards the end of the season with some bigger jumps thrown in. There was supposed to be a slopestyle contest but I don’t think that ever went down. The Chinese eyed downhill was insane. Pretty much every had fun except those that got arrested on the way in. Thanks for the ultimate snowboard party Grenade

At breakfast in June Lake on Saturday 4/19 the locals were taking bets as to how many people would get busted on their way into town. Well, who knows how many but the cops sure hassled a lot of people. It was pretty much bullshit. There was not one fight or one serious injury. Guess cops have to feel like they did something – save the town from the hooligans – crap. Other than that the Grenade Games were all about fun

20080420_grenadegames_03.jpg
Welcome to June Mountain a sign said “we own it today” and everyday. Referring to the fact that Grenade rented out the whole resort

20080420_grenadegames_04.jpg
Pretty much don’t dress like this unless you are Chris Bradshaw. Somehow it is ok for him to do it but if you do it, you are retarded. By the way there were a lot of Chris Bradshaw, Lane Knack and Danny Kass wannabees running around

20080420_grenadegames_05.jpg
Amy from Billabong. In 1990 I drove up to Mammoth with Brian Botts. Brian ended up moving to Salt Lake, riding Snowbird, working at a candy apple stand, getting a cover on Blunt, managing the snow team at DC and now works at real estate in Park City. Amy married Brian, moved out to San Marcos and lived with Brian, her twin sister and Chris Engelsman. Then divorced Brian and know she is at the Grenade Games hanging out with Kevin Casillo. Do you care, probably not. Kevin Casillo and Dave Schiff seemed to be running the show at 420 day

20080420_grenadegames_07.jpg
Pretty much you can thank this man for the Grenade Games and a lot of other things. Danny Kass started Grenade, built it from scratch and continues to be a key figure in the company. This picture – just some random trick, shows why he rule so bad, the little tweak and style is what separates the pros from the huckers

20080420_grenadegames_08.jpg
Luke Thorington from Juneau Alaska which happens to be the same town that Mark Landvik is from. He told me all sorts of interesting things about snowboarding in Alaska. If you want, email me and I will share my secondhand knowledge with you

20080420_grenadegames_09.jpg
Luke Mitrani – is he still sponsored by Mountain Dew?

20080420_grenadegames_11.jpg
Danny again and again with that style you can’t match

20080420_grenadegames_12.jpg
Our favorite ripper – Lonnie Kauk

20080420_grenadegames_13.jpg
Mason Aguirre and friend double up

20080420_grenadegames_14.jpg
Chas Guldemond very much enjoyed the 420 snowboarding activities a day early, on 419 actually

20080420_grenadegames_17.jpg
This was freaking funny. Johnny Centi was follow caming Nick Russell when a MASSIVE gust of wind almost blew them over backwards. Seriously, check out Nick’s hat and goggles flying off his head. It was funny cuz they both rode away safe, super sketchy

20080420_grenadegames_161.jpg
Chas Guldy again

20080420_grenadegames_18.jpg
Louie Vito is like my stepson - love that kid

20080420_grenadegames_19.jpg
Can you really see too much of Danny. If you are gay for sure not. I happen to not be gay but I like photos of Danny

20080420_grenadegames_20.jpg
Lonnie’s Brother Plake Kauk on the red eye

Don’t know who this is but Andrew said it was a cool shot

Go! The start of the Chinese eyed downhill which a race with simple rules – 1st down and to chug a Monster energy drinks wins. It was hectic

20080420_grenadegames_26.jpg
Vito and Casillo watching the action

20080420_grenadegames_27.jpg
This is the moment of truth and we have the photographic proof. The skier actually got down first but Thor crawled over him to go for the Monster

20080420_grenadegames_28.jpg
Here we see Thor with the winning chug, we also see Mason Aguirre (purple) and Lucas Magoon (brown) and others in the pile up
