Archive for April, 2008

Yes it is the end of April but here at the Revolution we roll till the last flake melts and you should be too. Truth be told, this my first actual snowboard trip of the year, on April 26th. The first trip that does not involve the pleasure of watching everyone else rip through the lens of camera anyway - I was hyped. Oregon is not really known as a huge winter vacation mecca as much as say Vail is. Mt Bachelor is more so than Mt. Hood but even so Mt Bachelor has no slopeside lodging and neither does Mt Hood, really. That does not mean you should not come here. There is a lot od other stuff to do here besides ride. The nearby Colombia River Gorge is gorgeous, all the skateparks down in the town of Portland, a mere hour away, plus the nightlife, naked hipppie hot springs, visit Nike – whatever. There are four resorts on the flank of Mt. Hood; Skibowl, Timberline, Cooper Spur and Mt Hood Meadows, the biggest of them all.

Mt Hood Meadows is super fun with lots of nooks and crannies. It reminded me of say 10 small east resorts all packed together into 2150 west acres with a lot of snow, good terrain parks and some steep ass easily accesable back country. The inbounds terrain is not too steep but there are windlips every where so the whole mountain is kind of a terrain park. Speaking of park, Mt Hood Meadows often hosts events like Vegetate and photo shots for Mack Dawg and the like so you know they support parks. Heather Canyon has some insane backcountry style runs that access by hiking or by snowcat. Located on the eastern flank of Mr Hood it is a spot to hit for sure while in Oregon. It may even be worthy to spend a week in Oregon; 2-4 days at Meadows and 2-4 days at Bachelor. Of course around the corner from Meadows is Timberline; the US mecca of summer snow but that is another story

All these boats were in the hotel, appearantly it is Chinook Salmon fishing season on the Columbia. You know Slamon, like the ones you see on tv, they weigh like 20-30 lbs

The surrounding scenery is, beautiful I spent three hours bushwacking to try to get a photo of Salmon swimming up river or big foot, it was fun looking though– The Wind River in Washington. There are some naked hippie hot springs on the wind river. I was once sat in there with the chick I was dating at the time, big ol’ salmon where swimming up stream, bald eagles were flying around. That was in, uh, 1992. Access to the springs is temporarily closed, times change

Not too much different than when Lewis and Clark came this way. Well add railroads, a freeway, dams, housees, mini marts, boats and lots of other stuff but it pretty much is still wild

In his late teens, Alex Perelson came up at Clairemont skatepark in the early part of this century under the guidance of Neil Blender and Darren Navarette and his dad with the video camera. Alex is just coming on strong in the past year. This huge and fast ollie transfer is BIO

My boss Ed said I should hook up with Danny to see for some photos one weekend in Mammoth. This guy was ripping so hard we a got a ton of photos in two days so I decided to ask him some questions…

Name: Daniel Brian Thomas
Hometown: Whitefish Montana
Age: 24
Current Residence: Mammoth Lakes CA
Sponsors: Oakley, Nomis, Bern Unlimited, OneWay Bordshop, and Burton has been helping me out tons….Jesus Christ, Much thanks to all of them!
Favorite snow brands: All of the above, All Analog outerwear…

SR: What brought you from Montana to Mammoth?
DT: I was always riding Powder, and wanted to push it more in the Park, and Mammoth has pretty much got that area locked down!….I also just wanted to get out and explore more of the world God gave us…

SR: Doesn’t Big Mountain have sick riding?
DT: The trees and powder is out of control…plus everyday you can feel like your the only one on the mountain just you , your tunes and God…

SR: Do you ever see Andrew Crawford in Montana?
DT: Yeah I have actually worked to build the little park that we had at Big Mountain and he came in and gave us some suggestions and was probably one of the most down to earth guys I have ever met…

SR: When you first rode the park in mammoth where you intimidated or did you know you could school everyone?
DT: I was deffinitely a little intimidated, but once you start watching everyone throw down, it pushes you more and more to become to land the tricks you always wanted to….it’s always nice to get pushed!…

SR: What is good about living in Mammoth?
DT: Where do I start?…I have learned more in the last year and a half with snowboarding than i ever have in my life, I met soo many good people, lots of best friends, I met My amazing girlfriend here, even tho I have only been here a few years I will always think of Mammoth my second home…

SR: What is bad?
DT: Theres not really many bad points, i guess sometimes I think the crowds get a little crazy, but then I think were all here for the same reason so I can’t really blame them…

SR: Do some of the girls take on multiple partners in Mammoth since there are so few
girls there?
DT: lol Ya know, I couldn’t really say, I don’t really take to the bar scene much…

SR: How do you “get” girls in Mammoth?
DT: Well my girlfriend is the only girl for me, and thats pretty much the way it’s always gonna be…

SR: Should people come to Mammoth or stay away?
DT: I think everyone should experience what mammoth has to offer, it’s a super fun experience!…

SR: What riders inspire you?
DT: I could go on for ever, but here are a few, Lonnie Kauk, Danny Davis, Kevin Pierce, Devin Walsh, Simon Chamberlain, andreas Wigg, I could go all day long…

SR:Best riders of all time?
DT:All of the above and always Terje…

SR: If you could steal the talent, style and or tricks of any 5 riders and combine them into one, who would you pick and why?
DT: I have always liked Danny Davis, and Kevin pierce’s style and tricks but I don’t want to take any of their talent, I just want to have my own style that God gave me and influence the next generation like they both influenced me…

SR: Top 5 songs and/or bands?
DT: Shiny Toy Guns, Kill Hannah, DJ Ratatat, Sounds, Black Audio….super fun to ride to….

SR: Who do you ride with?
DT: Neil Maher, Mourice Sanches, Josh Dibble, Forest Schmidt, just a few homies that really motivate me….

SR: What inspires you to shred?
DT: Everyone I see everyday pushing themselves and having fun and really taking advantage of that passion, cause there’s not much point in riding without the passion…

SR: Other interests besides snowboarding?
DT: Traveling to all sorts of places, hiking, hanging out with my girlfriend and family, camping, floating the owens river, pretty much anything outdoors…

SR: What are your friends back in Montana doing?
DT: Some have left Montana and the others are still shredding Big Mountain, and some are going to school….moving on doing their own thing….

SR: Do your parents want you get a real job or keep shredding?
DT: Well my family is pretty much my sis and my Mom and they have always been super supportive and helped me out alot along the way….I love them tons!

SR: Summer Plans?
DT: Mount Hood, maybe Camp of Champions, if I can get my pasport in time…lol…and eventually Snow Park in New Zealand…

SR: Plans for snowboarding - make a living or have fun?
DT: Well it will always be fun to me, but if I can make a living out of having fun than i’m all for it…

SR: Anyhthing else you want to say, fell free to sound off here
DT: God Bless everyone who helped me and supported me along the way, all my sponsors, family, Girlfriend, all my freinds, Snowboard Revolution, George Crosland for this interview, and always Jesus Christ!!

Thanks again george for everything!!

Danny sends it off the big jump at Mammoth, you know the one jump at Mammoth that when people go off of everyone on the chair and Gondola will turn around and look backwards at to watch

8_danny.jpg
Nose press at June. Danny was a super nice and respectful dude, probably as a result of his upbringing in Montana

9_danny.jpg
The big jump again. Danny does go to Church but his pastor (or preacher or whatever, sorry I don’t know) is Matt Hamer so it could very well be called the church of big air

Front board at June

12_danny.jpg
Andrecht on the truck trailer in the main park at Mammoth. While shooting this interview and Josh Dibbles we managed to destroy two boards - Danny’s and Josh’s if that is an indication as to how hard these guy rode in two days

14_danny.jpg
Blunt on the big vert wall at Mammoth. this was a fun ass session, Molly Aguirre and other joined us at this point and they just lapped the park and I sat around and took photos. Well taking photos was not as fun as lapping the park but it was still fun

Shaun Farmer and Bob Klien. They are in the band THC. Bob Klien is DK’s agent (or was at one time) also BK rode Squaw the first day it ever opened to snowboarding, along with Tina and Mike Basich, Mike Chantry, Don and Danielle Bostick and others. I tjhink BK was pro too. We all know who Farmer is…. or at least you should! I watched so many video footage of Farmer back in the day, Critical Condition “This is the greatest fucking rhyme of all time, drill a hole in your head - pour it into your mind” Shaun was also in First Decent - dude is epic!

bridges.JPG
Pat “the eye” Bridges does an Andrecht to fakie on the eye at the Grenade Games. He smoked a cigarette and chugged a Monster to get up to this. Bridges is the man… how many editors do you see killing it like this!

magoon.JPG
Lucas Magoon is not just a rail master, he can ride pipe pretty well too. Lucas was getting these sick ass front side tail taps but way beyond a tail tap cuz he was bending the SHIT out of his tail on em so he was fully balanced up there on the 420 red eye. Then he started busting these crazy tailtaps to fakie, which is what you see here. I am not even sure if there is a name for it - front tail block to fakie?

20080421_grenadegames420_046.jpg
Luke Mitrani has a pretty nice matching color combo going from his head down to his toe straps not to mention this nice front five

The Grenade Games went down in June Lake this past weekend to celebrate green. Today we give you a brief re-cap of Saturday’s events which was pretty much slopestyle day. Basically Grenade rented out June Mountain for a party. Pretty much no rule was the rule. The price of admission was $30 for one day or $50 for two. Keep in mind the price of admission included all the riding you can handle for 7 hours and free entry into any event of your choice. A private party at June Lake with some of the world’s best snowboarders and other like minded individuals – I am in! Lot’s of beer, lots of trips to the woods for 420 action, lots of action on the hill, lots of fun, and lots of drinking in the bars.

The slopestyle course was basically the same course that June had set up towards the end of the season with some bigger jumps thrown in. There was supposed to be a slopestyle contest but I don’t think that ever went down. The Chinese eyed downhill was insane. Pretty much every had fun except those that got arrested on the way in. Thanks for the ultimate snowboard party Grenade

20080420_grenadegames_02.jpg
At breakfast in June Lake on Saturday 4/19 the locals were taking bets as to how many people would get busted on their way into town. Well, who knows how many but the cops sure hassled a lot of people. It was pretty much bullshit. There was not one fight or one serious injury. Guess cops have to feel like they did something – save the town from the hooligans – crap. Other than that the Grenade Games were all about fun

20080420_grenadegames_03.jpg
Welcome to June Mountain a sign said “we own it today” and everyday. Referring to the fact that Grenade rented out the whole resort

20080420_grenadegames_04.jpg
Pretty much don’t dress like this unless you are Chris Bradshaw. Somehow it is ok for him to do it but if you do it, you are retarded. By the way there were a lot of Chris Bradshaw, Lane Knack and Danny Kass wannabees running around

20080420_grenadegames_05.jpg
Amy from Billabong. In 1990 I drove up to Mammoth with Brian Botts. Brian ended up moving to Salt Lake, riding Snowbird, working at a candy apple stand, getting a cover on Blunt, managing the snow team at DC and now works at real estate in Park City. Amy married Brian, moved out to San Marcos and lived with Brian, her twin sister and Chris Engelsman. Then divorced Brian and know she is at the Grenade Games hanging out with Kevin Casillo. Do you care, probably not. Kevin Casillo and Dave Schiff seemed to be running the show at 420 day

20080420_grenadegames_07.jpg
Pretty much you can thank this man for the Grenade Games and a lot of other things. Danny Kass started Grenade, built it from scratch and continues to be a key figure in the company. This picture – just some random trick, shows why he rule so bad, the little tweak and style is what separates the pros from the huckers

20080420_grenadegames_08.jpg
Luke Thorington from Juneau Alaska which happens to be the same town that Mark Landvik is from. He told me all sorts of interesting things about snowboarding in Alaska. If you want, email me and I will share my secondhand knowledge with you

20080420_grenadegames_09.jpg
Luke Mitrani – is he still sponsored by Mountain Dew?

20080420_grenadegames_11.jpg
Danny again and again with that style you can’t match

20080420_grenadegames_12.jpg
Our favorite ripper – Lonnie Kauk

20080420_grenadegames_13.jpg
Mason Aguirre and friend double up

20080420_grenadegames_14.jpg
Chas Guldemond very much enjoyed the 420 snowboarding activities a day early, on 419 actually

20080420_grenadegames_17.jpg
This was freaking funny. Johnny Centi was follow caming Nick Russell when a MASSIVE gust of wind almost blew them over backwards. Seriously, check out Nick’s hat and goggles flying off his head. It was funny cuz they both rode away safe, super sketchy

20080420_grenadegames_161.jpg
Chas Guldy again

20080420_grenadegames_18.jpg
Louie Vito is like my stepson - love that kid

20080420_grenadegames_19.jpg
Can you really see too much of Danny. If you are gay for sure not. I happen to not be gay but I like photos of Danny

20080420_grenadegames_20.jpg
Lonnie’s Brother Plake Kauk on the red eye

20080420_grenadegames_21.jpg
Don’t know who this is but Andrew said it was a cool shot

20080420_grenadegames_22.jpg
Cornell on a propane tank

20080420_grenadegames_23.jpg
Dingo and Kevin Casillo about to start the Chinese eyed downhill

20080420_grenadegames_24.jpg
Dave Schiff and Dingo spewing words at each other

20080420_grenadegames_25.jpg
Go! The start of the Chinese eyed downhill which a race with simple rules – 1st down and to chug a Monster energy drinks wins. It was hectic

20080420_grenadegames_26.jpg
Vito and Casillo watching the action

20080420_grenadegames_27.jpg
This is the moment of truth and we have the photographic proof. The skier actually got down first but Thor crawled over him to go for the Monster

20080420_grenadegames_28.jpg
Here we see Thor with the winning chug, we also see Mason Aguirre (purple) and Lucas Magoon (brown) and others in the pile up

While a lot of the country was freezing ass cold and people were riding powder (32″ inches of snow at Snowbird) it was blazing hot in So Cal. How hot? The surf report said the air temp at the beach was 95 degrees and the water temp was 61. So that meant a weekend of skating, longboard surfing, hiking and stuff. Was there a big football game, basketball, hockey, hell, I don’t care. Make your own action.

2_mountain.jpg
It is the time of year when sessions at the Vans combi pool heat up in anticipation of the Pro Tec Pool party. Most people opt to spend Friday night getting wasted but guys like Lance Mountain, Grosso, Salba, Kelly Belmar, Brain Patch and more chose to chase the adrenalin rush on a Friday night versus the artificial drug induced rush people get on a Friday night. Here is Lance Mountain making like a freight train through the corner while Salba watches and exits the pool. The Combi pool is a beast, 13 feet deep, slippery and endless line. Watching these guys figure out new lines in the pool and stick some runs is pretty sick!

1_patch.jpg
Brian Patch could be a threat to the Pool Party podium for sure. Again Salba walking out of the pool. Salba eats, drinks and breathe skateboarding and punk rock and has ever since 1978 (or earlier). These guys are living proof that you do not have to do what your high school guidance counseler tells you. Salba said he sakted a pool for 4 hours earlier that day while I was working in an office - life choices, ha

1_cedarcreek.jpg
95 degrees means a trip the the ol swimming hole. 96 foot deep waterfall into a giant pool of water was just the ticket

Cheryl on top of a podium is a familiar site. Here she is with Molly Aguirre and Desiree Melancolin at the Tahoe Cup rail jam in 2008

Cheryl Maas has come on super strong in the department of women’s snowboarding. Cheryl is 0% marketing and 100% results. No marketing necessary cuz her riding does the marketing for her. We sat down with her during a wind and snowstorm at the Roxy Chicken Jam to see what is up with the baddest female snowboarder from the Netherlands. She talks about snowboarding and peope going nuts in Holland, all the girls snowboarders and more. From my perspective she was super cool. I had never met her before, only shot photos at events. I just walked up to her at Mammoth and said “hey can I interview you for Snowboard Revolution” and she said sure. She was not in a hurry and just answered all my questions, nice, patient and made me feel like she would talk about anything which was great since I was a total stanger

Age: 23
Sponsors: Nitro, Volcom, Electric, Nixon, Vans, Celtic
Hometown: Udin “a small town in Holland”
Lives in: Biarritz, France

SR: How do you get to a point in snowboarding where you are?
CM: I don’t know, I have not been training that much in summer or anything. I was just really motivated this season to do well. I have just been riding a lot; the last two weeks in Tahoe with the Norwegian guys and they gave me some tips on the tricks I could do and made them a lot easier, more consitency. I guess that helps (laughter) besides that I have just been riding and having fun with it.

SR: Seems like having fun is the theme to people doing well this year, the more fun they have, the better they do
CM: Yea, if the pressure is on it makes it a lot harder

SR: What has been your favorite moment for the 07/08 season?
CM: I think winning the US Open was really cool. I got the overall so I got a Volvo; I never had that before. The Vans Cup was my first US winning so that was really nice

SR: That brings up one of the questions on my list, what are you going to do with the Volvo you won? (laughter)
CM: I am trying to get it to Europe so I can drive. If that’s not possible, I don’t know what they will do. I want to have it in Europe. For sure I want to have the car and drive it casue it looks really fun

SR: It seems like they could just give you one from Europe
CM: Yea, they come from Europe

SR: You drive it here (to Mammoth)
CM: No

SR: Is there a group of people yo travel around to snowboard with?
CM: The Roxy crew; at a lot of the contests I am hanging with them and when I am not riding in contests I am just travelling with my photographer from Volcom, riding with a lot of the guys that I know, filming for Yea so hanging with the Yea crew

SR: Who do you like riding with
CM: Lisa Wiik (sitting right there making fun of her), The Roxy girls, I was riding with Thomas Harstad last week; it was really fun because he taught me a lot, Stine Brun Kjeldaas, my brother when I see him but I hardly ever see him. A lot of people, I like to ride with everybody that’s into riding

SR: Top 5 riders
CM: Mr Haakanson
SR: He is good enough you call him mister
(laughter)
CM: Meester Haakanson, yes. Gigi Ruff and Nicolas Mueller, I like their style. Torah Bright is riding at such a high level in the pipe and technical; it’s really cool to see. A lot of females back in the day; Tara Dakides, Stine Brun and so on

SR: Favorite tricks
CM: Backside 5 tailgrab and I just learned backside 7 with tailgrab, so that as well

SR: First trick of the day
CM: I don’t know and ollie (laughs)

SR: Ok, here is what I want to know. You are from Holland, is there even a resort in Holland or just the plastic slope things?
CM: In my town we had the plastic slopes, that’s how I learned. Started skiing there and then snowboarding. There were little plastic jumps, that’s how I learned my tricks in the beginning. Then there were new developments in the indoor snow parks for the young kids to do jumps, rails and stuff. I learned mostly on the plastic and then I started travelling to Austria and Switzerland

SR: Do you think living not in the mountains growing up makes you more motivated and appreciates the snow more?
CM: I definitely think so because when I was home I was going crazy to ride the perfect pipe or park because we did’nt have any! As soon as I got to park or pipe I wanted to try as much as I could because eof the limited time I had to learn something. I guess with the mountain in the backyard, you can get lazy. You are there all the time and you want to do stuff if you live there.

SR: Does learning on plastic teach you good board control?
CM: I say it kind of makes you tough because when you fall…
SR:…you either break something or survive
CM: (laughs) yea

SR: Do you prefer Europe or US
CM: I really like the snowparks in the US, there is so much more and bigger stuff. I think the weather is somehow more stable over here than Europe. In Europe you have steeper mountains and really tiny resorts that are cozy and I like that as well

SR: Is it safe to say you like the atmosphere and freeriding in Europe but you like the parks and consistency in the US?
CM: Yea

SR: What about socially?
CM: Socially, It’s hard, it’s quite different, the culture, the Americans compared to the Europeans. Here everybody is like oh how are you doing and I always wonder do they really mean how am I doing or is just the thing to say, you know. In europe you don’t do that until you really know someone.

SR: That explain why when people from the US go to Europe they think everyone is mean (laughter) when they are really not mean. They just don’t talk insincerelly
CM: Yea

SR: Here everyone is all cheefull and like How are you doing and walk away, the expected answer is good
CM: Yea. The lift guys say Hows it going every chair I don’t know how they do it.

SR: In europe there is no..
CM: Yea, they are just doing their jobs

SR: So Amsterdam has a reputation as a party town, getting crazy, smoking weed and stuff, is all of Holland like that?
CM: Oh no, only Amsterdam! You can get weed anywhere but as far as the red light district…only Amsterdam. I think more toursists smoke weed in Amsterdam than the Dutch people do, it’s legal for us, it’s not that big of a deal. I think when the tourists come over they go crazy, they fly there and have a crazy weekend

SR: Sounds like Vegas; people go there and go crazy but if you live there you may never go to the strip?
CM: Yea

SR: So is Holland Liberal or conservative outside of Amsterdam?
CM: People are mellow, it is very open minded. It is no problem, whatever you think and whatever you say.

SR: Do you think it is more open minded than here (USA)
CM: Oh hell yea! Some areas are different though, like in Califonia people are more open minded but then you go to like Texas and it is not so open

SR: How tough is a Visa for the US for a pro snowboarder from Europe?
CM: I never got one. Every time I fly to the US I am scared of getting stuck in customs and they treat me like a criminal like “what are you coming here for” I will say to snowboard and they are like “Why?!” and I just say it is my job. There are big mountains here and parks and they are like really. Every time I am on the plane for 12 hours I am stressed just get through the border in 5 minutes. When you go to Europe they just pretty much say come on in. So far they just check my bag, I don’t twant to get in any trouble.

SR: Are contests easy or a challenge for you?
CM: It’s hard to work with the pressure. A lot of times I get my runs down in practice and as soon as the finals are on I get nervous and it gets harder to ride.

SR: Do you feel like girls enter contests more than guys for the money aspect, since guys get more vide parts and stuff?
CM: Nah, I don’t think girls enter contests just for the money. I think it is the thing to do. There’s not that many that film but compared to how big the girls could be; there’s only 2 film crews and some film with guys but the rest ride for themselves and the other thing to do is contests. They don’t get the easy access to photographers…I think they like to come, it’s not that competitive.

SR: Like hanging out with your friends?
CM: Yea

SR: Any film projects for you?
CM: I am fiming for Yea productions again, that’s in Europe and I am trying to get a couple of shots in Runway

SR: How is that going?
CM: So, so it’s been a slow season with snow so I did not get to shoot that much in the beginning. I got 2 or 3 shots, I hope they’re good enough. At the end of the season I am going to Norway to try to film more

SR: Plus you travel to all the contests and stuff so it’s hard to get time to film?
CM: Yea, the contests interfer with it

SR: You have an I-pod?
CM: I do have an I-pod

SR: What are you listening to?
CM: I don’t know the names but the songs from Afterbang and Afterlame. I listen to all kinds of music, nothing specific like hip-hop or punk, I listen to all of it.

SR: Summer plans?
CM: Surf a lot in Biarritz and try to go on a holiday with some surfing

SR: So Cal, when you visit Vans
CM: No probably not, I am not going to come in summer. I wish I had time a week ago to surf

Speaking of Metal, here is Jeff Brushie again. I was talking to him in Tahoe and he is always a nice dude. I asked what he was up to and he laughed and said nothing, he is a house dad. For thos of you too young to know, Jeff Brushie was like top 5 in the 90’s and stuff. He was the man for sure. He said he bought two houses with the money he made back in the day and stays home with his kids in Pacific Beach, CA. He also shoots some poker photos with Rob Gracie (an old snowboard photog) in Vegas for money. He also judges contests too from time to time. Anyway, if you ask me the snowboard industry should just have a retiremunt fund for dudes like Brushie becasue they gave so much to the sport.
