Archive for the Icer Big Air Contest Category

Trice, Wiig and Kass take top honors at the Icer air big air jump! That is a pretty heavy crew of guys they got to show up. To understand this event you have to first know that last year it happened in the streets of San Francisco. Since SF is a beautiful city and I like snowboarding, I really wanted to see it last year. Unfortunately SF is full of whiners and the citizens complained about having the event tie up the streets so it was banned from the street. This year it was held in AT&T park, the home of Barry Bonds and the Giants.

It was kind of a mixed bag in that the event was cool but took way too long. If it was 3-5 hours instead of ten, it would have been great. Instead of boring you endless words, lets just go through the pros and cons. Overall, it was fun, I recommend it as a way to see some snowboarding in the city. Thanks to Esurance, Icer and the other sponsors!

Pros
- With skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, good bands, lots of booths and good weather, there was plenty to do for everyone

- Tony Hawk skated, which was great to witness

- Always great to see some of the world’s best shredders together – good times

-Crazy big jump, cool to see a jump at a pre season event as opposed to another rail jam

-Good bands

-Good action

- Seeing snowboarding in a baseball park

Cons
-The event was too long

-Other than Tony, there were no real skaters there, for how much money was spent; they should have sprung for some pro skaters

-Crazy kinked jump
Tara from Ride Snowboards and Tara Dakides hanging out in the infield of the San Francisco Giants ballpark. Tara Dakides did not enter the event which is a good thing because I think they cancelled the girl’s event, more on that later. Tara said “That jump looks sketchy; maybe if I drink enough beer I would hit it”

Mason Aguirre was saying how good New Zealand was this year and how he may compete a little less and film more, good for Mason, reaping the rewards from his hard work and successful snowboard career, that kid deserves it3_mason.jpg

Here is an overview of the gap they had to clear, it was pretty high up there. The whole thing seemed kind of sketchy. There was a kink in the run in ramp that threw everybody off balance. The landing ramp seemed a little narrow and so on. Of course guys like Travis Rice and Andreas Wiig made it look easy which is what happens when you get that good, everything looks easy8_drink2.jpg

Danny Kass on this single warm up jump “I jumped once so I think I qualified for the finals” 9_kass.jpg

Ladytron was one of the bands that played. Pretty sure you have heard there song “Destroy Everything” on the radio10_ladytron.jpg

The women had some issues with the jump. The men barely cleared it and since women weigh about 75% as much as men, the gals had issue gaining enough momentum. One of the girls slid off the side, fortunately, near the bottom. This girl did come close to clearing it and went “into the drink” luckily she was alright. The women’s event kind of ended after that 11_drink.jpg

Tony Hawk did a brief demo – 540. The crowd went ape shit when he took to the ramp12_hawk2.jpg

Jamie Anderson is a serious ripper from Tahoe. She was in the women’s contest and she did not know if the women’s contest was going on. After that no more women went so let’s assume they called 13_jamieanderson.jpg

Overview from the nose bleed seats. Danny Kass and Mason Aguirre were sitting way up here during J-5, probably staying away from the crowds and pain in the ass reporters 17_overview1.jpg

Here is Travis Rice’s wining trick – backside rodeo 7, trust me that was huge for this jump 18_tricebackrodeo7.jpg

Louie Vito19_vito.jpg

I was sitting in a “VIP” section where they gave away free Sparks which is a malt beverage that is 7% alcohol but all revved up like Red Bull. There were lots of single girls all hopped up on it and down on the field it looks like some people, like this guy, were enjoying Sparks as well
