The X Games are the best and the worst of snowboarding. The best in the sense that the level of performance is insane. The worst in that no where else do you have more corporate people that give not one fuck about the sport grabbing on to the sport. All bitterness aside, the X Games are super fun to attend and watch. Aspen is a great town and the riding is insane. NO the mountains are not crowded so take my advice, don’t sweat the corpo stuff, they give us lots of money, grab your Taco Bell hat and get to Aspen.

I narrowed it down to just the Snowboard events for you, cuz screw the other ones, right? That’s right, big air is back!

Stepchild Rider Scotty Vine handled big business amongst a heavy group of veterans and newbies in this past Saturday’s event at Bear Mountain in Big Bear California. It seems nowadays that “parking lot” rail jams are more and more common but Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails is much more than that. The course was almost like a slopestyle course with so many obstacles. Kyle Lopicolo said it was “fucking rad” and Marc Franc said “he wishes he was out there” if those guys said that, who am I to say anything different? This event is kind of the season opener if you will. Not only do a lot pros show up to ride, many more show up to hang out, watch the action and hook up with old friends after a summer of traveling to South America/New Zealand or just working on their skateboarding or surfing. Some pros seen hanging out were; JP Walker, Seth Huot, Hana Beaman, Robbie Sell, MFM and more.

The first thing you would notice different this year than last year was how many freakin people showed up and why not? Top pros, fashion shows, chicks, video premiers, parties and such. It was definitely worth braving the drive up there. Braving the drive because a fire was raging across the lake and one of the roads up the mountain was closed. I digress, back to the event. The only real drawback was that the Security was pretty into keeping the fans in line. Drinks were available though, you just had to keep it on the deck, so no big.

If you had the right pass, like the Revolution crew, then you could get up slope side and it was pretty much anything goes on course. Snowboarder’s Pat Bridges was kind of in charge and he said he was having a very hectic day. Dave Duncan was co-mc along with Dingo and he made sure everyone within sight got free beers. I am convinced that the best possible combination of announcers would be Dave Duncan, Dingo and Todd Richards, Todd was not there but Dave and Dingo did a fine job keeping it loose but under control. Dave said he opted to get paid less so he could have an un-limited tab. Dave always does his best to make sure an event is fun.

The action started around 2:30pm with a qualifying jam. Top qualifiers joined those that were pre qualified. All in all the finals included (but not limited to) Mike Burton, Chris Bradshaw, Cory Cronk, Tyler Flanagan, Lucas Magoon, Scotty Vine, Melissa Evans, Desiree Melancolin, Chad Tarbell, Tim Eddy, Lance, Kyle Lopiccolo, Iris Lazz, Keegan Valaika, Jonas Michilot and more. A one hour jam ensued and winners were announced.

It was all hard to follow cuz the action was fast and furious but standout maneuvers included: Chad Tarbell’s insane tricks off the big drop, including a backside 270 – tail-out, Tim Eddy and Kyle’s work on the bottom transitions, Scotty Vine working the whole course (I asked Scott what he did to win he said “I don’t remember”), Scott Stevens was a name that came up a lot with one footers, front 7’s, front flip and more. Lucas Magoon looked like he was cruising, Mike Burton looked solid. Chris Bradshaw looked good till he bruised his femur. The women jammed with the men but were scored separately. When the rapidly melting snow settled it came down to the following. Joey Sexton winning best trick, Melissa Evans getting 2nd and Iris Lazz getting 1st in the girls. Scott Stevens (3rd), Nick Dirks (2nd) and Scotty Vine (1st) took all the men’s prize money.

Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails probably is one of the finest non-natural snow events out there and you know the real snow is coming soon!

1_overview.jpg
Here is the course. The first set of stunts included a down rail, box thing and down-flat-down. The second set had a flat-down box with little rails on the side, a grass gap jump and a big ol’ flat box to big drop. The last set included two quarterpipes, one with a skate style spine the other with a barrel type thing on top

Chances are if you are reading this you are thinking about Snowboarding in May, which means you are really into it. You think about snowboarding all year, not just in the winter like all the tag along types. You know the ones that only ride on Presidents day or such bullshit. You are like us here at the Revolution, you can not get enough, you are a lifer. You may or may not be stuck in some shit hole town far from the snow. Fear not, many of the shreds you see pictures of here were in a similar situation. Through dedication and work they ended up in Mammoth in May. It was rad and someday you gotta go. Put down the fuckin X Box, make it happen. Or maybe you are rich and can do what you want or maybe you are just really board. Anyway, here is snowboarding in May.

Stoked! It snowed and the weather was so snowy that the second annual Vans Fiesta de la Pipa at the Mammoth was delayed from Friday May 4 until Sunday May 6. Bullshit you say? Maybe so but not for moi cuz I had to trabajo (work) at my normal job on Friday. That means I got to witness the pipe action in freakin May. Who cares I have seen a million contests, right? Wrong! This was not like other pipe contests - it’s a 3-hour jam, judged by the riders themselves, in a freshly-built, 18-foot Zaugg-cut pipe lined with boxes, rails, unique jibs and piñatas. So this was more like some of the best pipe riders around riding pipe for a few hours, not a best of 3 run slog. Fun to watch – check out the action, take a run, grab a beer, smoke a blunt in the woods (I don’t condone drug use but if you do, who am I to judge) go back, watch some pipe runs, bang your girlfriend in the hotel room, watch some more…you get the idea…a cruising, yet exciting good time. For those who do not know a piñata (pronounced pin-yata) is a paper machete thing that is full of candy and kids try to hit it with a stick will blindfolded. Only the Piñatas became jibs.

The action was not like the big airs you usually see in the pipe. It was a subtle beauty. Like Peter Line doing 540 to lip slides on the box, Pat Moore inverting off the tombstone, Chad Otterstrom doing complex tricks on the obstacles, to Tyler Flannagen just doing laps. It was a good time. Thanks Mammoth! Oh yes the freeriding was kick ass and the park is still good

More Todd Richards quotes

“Thanks to Mammoth, Vans, Red Bull, and Quiksilver but mostly Quicksilver. Thanks mostly to Quiksilver”

“Hey Cody high five yourself”

“Just tell them you are Shaun White, you have red hair” – to Pat Moore

“How about Smith and Wesson? I would like to see more relevant sponsors come in and sponsor events”

“Hey Todd I bet Paul Mitchell has bought you an Audi” – Sullivan

“Paul Mitchell is right for Snowboarding”

Kimmy Fasani was telling me that Kelly Clark looked like the winner. However in the end Jamie Anderson was announced the winner. Jamie was a sleeper. Not going big or anything but towards the end of the jam I was thinking that she was hitting a lot of the obstacles, prolly why Jamie won. Anyway here is Kelly Clark doing an invert

Two-peat, not the Superbowl way but Chad winning in 2006 and 2007. Got a lot of photos of Chad spinning big airs but this nose bonk was chosen cause how often do you see nose bonks in a pipe? Right?
3_chad.jpg

Cody Rosenthal was definitely in the top ten, maybe top 5 or top 8, somewhere in there

Mason Aguirre may be a top Burton head be he aint above shredding with his pals for three hours. He was not in it for the money but fun. Molly was hurt, I think is what I heard. Front 7 for Mason here
5_mason.jpg

Chaz Guldemond was ripping today. Last night I thought he should have won the rail jam. Turns out many others thought that too but Chaz was not listed on the ballot. Chaz was on the ballot and scored second today. Hopefully that helps ease the pain of being overlooked last night
6_guldemond.jpg

Pat Bridges on the box. Pat Bridges is the fucking man, he runs Snowboarder Mag and he is a lifer, a total dirtbag and totally dedicated to snowboarding. He was flipping off the box, smoking during his runs, yelling that Peter Line sucked and so on. Todd Richards would say “yes it is the boxes fault, you did not make it” You should subscribe to Snowboarder if for no other reason than Pat Bridges. I will buy you $14 worth of beers in a bar if you do
7_bridges.jpg

Pat Moore hand planting off the elevator tombstone thing not many people utilized this obstacle in a creative way. Todd Richards, Peter Line and Pat come to mind. I know a few others killed it too. From the lift in the morning (it was and hard as a rock) Kelly Clark was a little leery of the tombstone but as things softened up it became more user friendly
8_moore.jpg

Little Luke Mitrani is not so little anymore. He could likely kick your ass, although that is unlikely to happen cuz Luke is nice kid

Oh yea, Saturday Night in the Village at Mammoth with one of the sickest rail jams. You gotta love it. It was May and instead of giving up on winter Mammoth threw a gigante snowboard fiesta. Some of the sickest riders who can not get enough of winter showed up. Along with hip hop groups from Portland to L.A. featuring MyG with special guest Abstract Rude and Aceyalone, as well as performances by North Coast Underground, Hungry Mob and Sandpeople. I don’t know who those bands are because I prefer Metal! However, as a reporter I felt it necessary to mention that there were hip hop bands with drunk and sober people having fun. Riders, lurkers, money grabbing whores, cool chicks, assholes and bros – a good vibe all around, ha.

The set up was a triple line built on 3 stories of scaffolding – “the likes of which riders Yale Couisno, Travis Kennedy and Mike Casanova have never seen before”. All new stadium seating provide improved visibility as spectators watched action on features including a down box with ledges, a 35-foot single 2-inch-round down rail and a 37-foot down-flat-down single rail. After negotiating that line of features they proceeded to an 8-foot tall, 24-foot wide wall ride.

So the action was pretty sick. The three trick line meant everyone had to be on top of their game. There did not seem to be too much flow to the course but it was a good time for all, especially the crowd. The tricks were not as tech as other jams due the combination of rails. Finesse, power and consistency took the win. Chaz was looking like a winner but Jonas Michilot was declared the victor in the end. Scot Vine and Yale Cuisno looked good. Oh, and by the way, the riding at Mammoth was insane on Saturday. Cold temps, and new snow meant conditions were great. If you were not there, you missed it.

Todd Richards (co-announcer) quotes

“I am starting a healthy hot dog chain called Ji-Hot Dog”

“Would you say it is more about the fashion than the riding?”

“You have not said anything about sustainability of the earth”

“K-Fed is here”

Chaz Guldemond get the balls out award cuz he was throwing it out there. He kinda looked like the winner but the riders themselves were the judges and who do you think knows more, me or the riders

We all know that much of the snowboard industry and media is in Southern California even though most of the photos come from all over the world. This is due to the snow industry’s tie with skating and surfing. I often see pros and industry magnates in my journeys to and from So Cal. It seems ridiculous but this is where the industry is. Even pro snowboarders make So Cal home. It is not un-common to see Tara Dakides surfing in Carlsbad, or Shaun White at the Y skating or Todd Richards at the Pannikan. One time I sat next to Keir Dillon and his wife on a plane to Carlsbad and asked about living in Carlsbad. He said that he rides over 200 days a year all over the world and it does not matter where he lives. In fact he said he lived in Whistler for a while that he was on the road so much that he “rides Whistler now more that I live in Carlsbad than when I actually lived in Whistler.” By the way, Keir flies first class. Burton does not pay for it but he has so many miles on United that they just put him in 1st automatically. We were on a small plane without first class.

So here is my journey from So Cal to Idaho and back, a pattern (although not always to Idaho) repeated by many who are lucky enough to make some $ traveling to work in the snow industry.

The 3rd round of the Grand Prix took place at Tamarack Idaho, a new resort, having opened in November of 2004. It is located about 100 miles N.W. of Boise in a very low key but rapidly growing area centered on McCall Idaho. You might say it is un-discovered. The resort is very modern and nice and caters to those that can afford real estate there and limit tickets to 2,000 a day. It is like exclusive with out that attitude. According to Jessica Flynn at Tamarack, they were throwing this contest to draw more attention to the resort as they do not want to cater only to the wealthy. They are one of the most snowboard friendly resorts in the state with 3 parks and a superpipe. They want everyone up there.

Gretchen Bleiler said she was “having a great time free riding here” Here she lofts a little random air. There is tons of stuff to air off here at Tamarack. The snow was kick ass all weekend

The Burton team (like 25 percent of snowboarding) was off in Japan for The Nippon open which is cool because many of the up and comers were here in Idaho. At first I was bummed that a lot of top riders were gone but then it was a great chance to see the new crew shine. No hype, no Outside magazine, no Shaun White Papparazzi’s, just action. Practice was looking sick but then it started snowing and the pipe got slower as the finals started which may have thrown people off. It did not matter though; the contest was so fun and Tamarack did a great job. EVERYONE was so stoked on riding powder too.

The contest riding was good despite the snow. The overall winner of the three contest Grand Prix series got a decked out Chevy Avalanche. Kelly Clark had locked it up in the first two contests and got the truck even though she was a no show. For the men it came down to Louie Vito, Tommy Czeschin, and Steve Fisher. Vito got 2nd and Czeschin got 1st so that put Tommy ahead. Steve Fisher needed second to win the truck but blew his runs. It came down to Scotty Lago, the last run of the day; somehow if he got 2nd then Vito would have gotten the truck over Tommy. Lago blew his run too so Tommy walked away the overall winner.

Sunday was Boardercross day but I decide to ride the foot of new pow instead. It really was a great event with hot action, free alcohol, good food, great vibe, good crowd and so on. Locals were saying it was probably the biggest group of people ever gathered in the county. Tamarack is loads of funs and trading pow turns with the pros was even better. Check it out someday – later. Oh, yea, Monday morning – back at work.

Giacomo Kratter puts the pedal to the metal…

…The very next wall he broke his tibia, this stuff is no joke

Gregory Bretz spins through a front 7

Luke Mitrani is more than just cute, big haired spoke kid for Mountain Dew, the kid rips!

4_lukemitrani.jpg

Chad Otterstrom, Transworld’s rider of the year, took some time away from filming stuff to get these insane first wall spins

Luke Wynen shows off his new colors…Stihl chainsaws. I saw Luke in Starbucks sat night hanging out with Kelly Clark, Tommy Czeschin and others. Luke said he was stoked to be sponsored but Stihl, they have and indy spirit like snowboarding and more corporate money means more money for snowboarders

Gretchen Blieler was there but only managed 7th place. We all still love her anyway

7_blieler.jpg

Cecile Alzina came from France and was looking pretty strong

8_CecileAlzina.jpg

Holly Crawford, from Australia was also looking like a contender. Holly managed to find 5th place

9_hollycrawford.jpg

Feels like we’ve been here before. Elena Hight got second last year and repeated that performance this year

Of course we can not skip Kelly Clark, she won the whole show. With Hannah gone and Gretchen getting 7th it was obvious Kelly would win. She did not even have bust out a big run, she kind of cruised. Yea, huge airs like this are cruising
