Motorhead is one of the greatest live bands ever. For whatever reason I had never seen them so this was an exciting event for me. Motorhead started in 1975 when Lemmy Kilmister was kicked out of Hawkwind for drug use. Lemmy is the heart and soul of the band which has had several different members in the past 33 years. Motorhead is the one band that has stayed true it’s roots. Hard music centered around a life of drugs, sex and rock and roll. No turning gay and getting symphonies, no bull shit. Lemmy has been rumored to say he prefers sex with hookers and rumors say he still uses drugs. Howard Stern once said ”If Lemmy quit doing drugs he would probably die” Motorhead IS METAL – PERIOD if you do not agree, fuck you! Motohead is one of the few real deals lefts. The current line up consists of Phil Campbell on guitar (for 24 years) and Mickey Dee on drums (for like 15 years?). Lemmy said Mickey is the “best drummer in the world”. They have seen it all and done it all, from being nominated for a grammy to playing shit clubs to playing arenas around the globe for 33 fucking years. Uhh, they did not seem nervous and were obviously tight as any band can be. Lemmy is almost 60 and will dies on the stage
I even almost burned down the family house listening to Motorhead. My friend Rob Elton and I were rocking out to Motorhead when I thought it would be rad to light the record on fire while rocking. I pour gas on the record and sure enough the metal rocked while flames roared. Also sure enough the flames in my room were 4 feet high but we averted disaster and was left with severe carpet damage and my parents wondering what the hell was wrong with me.
The show was during ASR so many “industry types” were there, including the like of Geoff Rowley. The opening bands were Year Long disaster, whom I did not listen to and Valiant Thor was is a fun band that plays good music and puts on a good Spinal Tappish show. Motorhead played a lot of new songs but closed the set with oldies like Going To Brazil, Iron Fist and so on. The encore consisted of an acoustical tune call Whorehouse Blues then straight into Ace of Spades and closing with Overkill. I did not take my notebook but I am pretty sure those where the songs. San Diego normally has a too for school crowd but the pit action was in full effect for the 30-45 years old that don’t get out their aggression elsewhere. Me, I was mesmerized watching the band. I felt like I was watching Led Zeppelin. It was one the best shows in San Diego history. You should see Motorhead before you die!
Valiant Thor warmed everybody up. As my friend said Julio Iglesias can open for Motorhead, it does not matter but Valiant Thor rocked
The fucking Man! Lemmy Kilmister. The House Of Blues does not allow cameras so I was stuck with the Power shot
Drumming so fast he is invisible, Mickey Dee can play the drums for sure. Go see for yourself, go see Motorhead! Oh yea and unlike Motorhead, the show was sold out – packed.
